Monetae’s New Platform

Monetae has rolled out Monetae Markets, a regulated digital finance platform tailored for investors in El Salvador. The service gives users exposure to 70 tokenised U.S. equities and ETFs—from individual stocks to broad‑market funds—through a single, low‑barrier entry point. Minimum commitments begin at just $5, allowing a wide range of retail participants to diversify into U.S. markets without the need for traditional brokerage accounts.

Partnership with Alpaca

The product is built on Alpaca’s established brokerage and custody infrastructure. Alpaca supplies the back‑end services—execution, settlement, custody and movement of the underlying securities—while Monetae manages the front‑end, regulatory compliance and customer experience in El Salvador.

Yoshi Yokokawa, Co‑Founder and CEO of Alpaca, noted that the collaboration “provides Salvadoran customers with a regulated path to tokenised U.S. equities and ETFs while Alpaca delivers the essential market infrastructure.”

Alpaca does not act as the token issuer or front‑end broker for Salvadoran clients. Instead, through its Alpaca Securities division, the company offers a full brokerage stack that supports order execution, custody, settlement and the transfer of the underlying U.S. shares. Additionally, Alpaca’s OmniSub platform handles position management, reconciliation and corporate action processing, enabling an omnibus‑style model where Alpaca holds and tracks the real securities while Monetae administers the tokenised product.

How the Tokenised Model Works

Unlike a conventional U.S. brokerage account, Salvadoran investors purchase regulated tokenised products issued by Monetae. These tokens represent fractional ownership in the underlying U.S. equities and ETFs. Because the tokens are issued through a regulated platform, investors do not need to open an offshore brokerage, wire funds to a foreign institution, or juggle multiple applications.

The exact legal structure of the tokenised instruments, the specific investor rights attached to them, and whether token holders receive standard shareholder privileges remain undisclosed. Monetae and Alpaca have not yet provided detailed documentation on these aspects.

Industry Context and Competition

Monetae’s entry into the tokenised U.S. equity space joins a growing cohort of platforms offering similar services outside the United States. Kraken’s xStocks provides tokenised shares to non‑U.S. users, while Ondo Global Markets targets qualified investors in Latin America and beyond. Monetae differentiates itself by focusing on a fully regulated local platform rather than simply offering the widest range of products.

Alpaca has previously supported regional brokerage launches. Earlier this year, Indonesian broker Valbury began trading U.S. stocks using Alpaca’s Broker API and OmniSub technology, demonstrating a similar model of leveraging U.S. infrastructure for local markets.

Regulatory and Investor Considerations

The partnership’s regulatory framework is anchored in El Salvador’s financial oversight. Monetae operates a licensed digital finance platform that complies with local regulations, providing a level of consumer protection absent in many unregulated token offerings.

However, the lack of transparency regarding the token’s legal status and investor rights suggests potential risks. Traders should be aware that token holders may not enjoy the same rights as traditional shareholders, such as voting or dividend entitlements, unless explicitly stated in the token’s terms.

Future Outlook

Monetae intends to concentrate on El Salvador for the first 12 months, using that period to gauge adoption, user engagement and operational performance. The company plans to assess the platform’s success before considering broader regional expansion across Latin America.

By combining a low‑cost entry point, a regulated local interface, and robust U.S. infrastructure, Monetae seeks to offer Salvadoran investors a streamlined way to tap into global equity markets while mitigating the complexities of offshore brokerage arrangements.
